verse 7: “The beginning of wisdom is: Acquire wisdom; And with all your acquiring, get understanding.”
“When I win the lottery, here’s what I’m going to do with the money”.
“When I’m rich, I’m going to (fill in the blank).”
“When I graduate from school, I’ll be (fill in the blank).”
We hear these statements all the time; sometimes we are the ones making them. When I have this, I’ll do that. The key of course is “when”. The person making these statements doesn’t possess the riches or things that they talk about yet. They have dreams and plans for them; that’s fine to do. Unfortunately, concrete plans or actions are sometimes made on the stuff of dreams, yet until the subject of those dreams is acquired, nothing will happen.
The writer of Proverbs states here: the beginning of wisdom is to get it! Acquire it! Because it’s hard to use wisdom if you don’t have it. You won’t have it, if you don’t get it first.
I’m reminded of the words of Jesus from Matthew 7:7: “Ask, and it shall be given to you, seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you.” My wife was reminded of the words of James 1:5-6: “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.”
Something to think about.
