Verse 12: “Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering;”

“I choose door number 3”
“The club elects (fill-in-the-blank) as President…”
“With the first pick in the (fill-in-the-year) NFL draft, the (fill-in-the-blank team) selects…”
“And the Oscar goes to…”
“The winner is…”

Don’t you like being chosen for a reward or prize? Many times, we want to be picked, much like Arnold Horshack claiming to know the answer on the old TV show, Welcome Back, Kotter. Sometimes we are picked because of something we did on our own; sometimes we’re picked due to outside influences. Just as it is a neat feeling to be picked (when you want to be), it can be disheartening not to be picked (and this is coming from someone who used to be the last one picked when divvying up teams in Physical Education class! 🙂 )

As Christians, we are “the elect of God”…the word “elect” here means “chosen”. We didn’t do anything to earn being picked; if anything, our sins would ordinarily cause us NOT to be picked. But when you choose to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior (which is a choice you make), you become a part of the chosen of God. This isn’t a game show host or club membership or the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences choosing you…this is GOD! And as the elect of God, we are called to act different than the world from which we came.
