Verse 17: “And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”

“Whatsoever ye eat or drink
or whatsoever ye do,
do all to the glory of God,
do all to the glory of God”

This is part of a chorus my wife learned on a visit to Hyles-Anderson College, when she was interviewing colleges to attend. When I read today’s verse to her, she remembered this chorus; in referencing it, she also found 1 Corinthians 10:31. It got to me thinking about the phrase “do all in the name”. As Christians, everything we do should honor God. As the New Living Translation reading of Colossians 3:17 states: “And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.” (I found that translation at a very nice Bible research site: http://biblehub.com/colossians/3-17.htm).

The word “representative” jumped out at me. You see, that’s what we Christians are on earth: representatives, examples, ambassadors of Jesus Christ to an unsaved world. It goes right in line with an old piece of advice: you may be the only Jesus someone sees today. So, like worldly ambassadors who represent their countries, are you representing God’s Kingdom?

Something to think about.
