verses 14, 18-19: “For the body is not one member, but many.” “But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired. And if they were all one member, where would the body be?”
I am reminded of an old Peanuts comic strip. In a nutshell, Snoopy is jogging…and as he is jogging, the different parts of his body are arguing over who is doing the most work: the feet running, the arms pumping, the brain driving, the lungs and heart kicking in high gear. The punch line is when Snoopy is back on his doghouse, thinking to himself, “I only ran a mile, why am I exhausted???”
The title of The Creator is one title God owns singly. It is amazing to consider the physical human body and all its composite parts, all working together and functioning as He designed. Man, in his vain pride, has often boasted about duplicating artificially some of those functions and parts, and has (through God’s grace!) to an extent. But try to build an entire human being? Well, I can only think of one fictitious story where someone tried to do that, and it didn’t turn out too well for Dr. Frankenstein!
Likewise Paul is drawing this analogy about the church. We all can’t or aren’t supposed to be the preacher; we all can’t lead the music; we all can’t teach the Sunday School class. Sometimes, parts of the “body” are called to sweep a floor, play with a baby in the nursery, lead a game of Dodgeball in AWANA, visit someone needing a visit, welcoming someone with a hug, or a being a prayer warrior! Regardless, God didn’t call us just to be “John Q. Pew-sitter”; He also didn’t tell us to do it all, either!
Seek His will today over where He wants you. He told me recently (while in the midst of depression, crying out for help) to serve with my wife in children’s choir. And believe me wholeheartedly here: when you hear Him like I heard Him, your attention is gotten! One of my favorite verses to claim is in Matthew 7:7 “Ask and it shall be given to you, seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you…”
Do your part as part of the body.
